My Closet Reveal: Mission Organization

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

When I first decided on my 2013 resolution I knew I needed to pick up and organize my closet. It looked like WWIII up in this hiz-house...okay not the whole house, but the closet for sure. I usually get home from work, head straight to the closet and change into my lounge clothes. I throw (literally) my shoes in a huge pile, throw my clothes in another pile, and head to the kitchen to make dinner. After a while it truly seems like a war zone in that space.
Staying organized is one of the biggest components of staying focused on a goal. I have a whole year of no shopping and I don't want to be in a cluttered closet thinking "I have nothing to wear!" all because my space is not organized. My goal this year it to actually wear every piece in my closet. Every.single.piece.
I don't have any fancy-schmancy hangers (although tossing the wire ones are on my to-do list!! so annoying) or plastic contraptions that spit out my outfits for each day. My dream is Cher's closet on Clueless! Anyone agree? Just to be able to push a button and wa-laaa! Ah, I sure am a dreamer lately :)
First things first was to get my shoes in order. Chris, if you are reading this, no I don't want to get rid of any shoes. I like, and wear, them all, honey! Shoes are my weakness. They are like icing on the cake. An outfit can be so blah, then when the perfect shoe is put on (much like in Cinderella) it transforms you into an instant state of happiness. Can I get an amen?!
Everyone is different when organizing their shoes. For me, I need to be able to see all my shoes if I am going to wear all of them. If they are thrown on the ground in a large pile (as they were ten minutes prior to this clean up) it is hard to get a feel for all of your shoes and you end up wearing the same shoes over...forgetting about the gems hidden in the back! It was like Christmas morning finding all the shoes I had forgotten about!

Every morning I would be stressed out searching through this pile looking for a shoe's mate. When you are early already 10 minutes late for work and you can't find your (bleeping!) shoe it makes you want to start your whole outfit over!! I have been guilty of that, but alas, not anymore!

Doesn't this make you instantly happier for me and my stress levels?! Ahhhh...

Chris calls this my hooker heel section. He obviously has no idea what is fashionable these days. He can't simply see that fact that I just want to be taller, ehhhh closer to heaven :)

Sometimes he specifically requests me NOT to wear those shoes with the coral on them if we are going on a date. I can't say that I always grant his wishes!! Hey, I won't be able to rock those babies forever! Plus, it makes me giggle when I get compliments on them and I look at Chris and he rolls his eyes as I say, "Told you they were cute!"

This trusty tub has been with me for yearsss. My poor Dad would complain every time I moved about having to lug this thing around. Thanks, Dad, you da best!! In college all of my shoes were smashed in here and I neglected 99.9% of them. Poor shoes. Luckily, playing softball in college meant we were in tennis shoes or cleats all day everyday, so half of my shoes never made their debut until I stopped playing!

Since there are no true seasons here in good 'ol Texas, I have no reason to store away my "winter" shoes. Yesterday I was wearing sandals and today I am back to boots with the furrr a jacket. Kinda annoying when you dress for the 70's in January (yes, yesterday was 77 and today it is 50), only to walk to your car after work and be met by an arctic freeze.
Now onto how I organized my clothes for the year!
I decided the way to get through the year without DYING to have new clothes is to ACTUALLY wear ALL the clothes I already own. Some of the pieces may not be my favorite, but as long as I don't go to work naked, I can bear the thought of not having a super-cute outfit for one day. Two days in a row, and I might lose it ;)
I separated a row in my closet for "clothes that have been worn this year" and "clothes to be worn." It is described in the picture below. Basically, I wear a shirt, wash it, and hang it back up on the left side. I don't do the same for pants because I am obviously going to have to repeat those. There are over 50 shirts on the right side! Yikes! Some of them have only been worn once. Plus I can pair them with cardigans, or layer them for different looks. This "separation" system has been working great so far! If I am going to run to the grocery store really fast, or to church, I try to grab from the "already worn" side, just so I can make sure I get full use out of all my items.
The way the right side is organized is by color, and then it separates to sleeveless. Black, black patterned, brown, brown patterned, blue, yellow, white, etc. It really helps sorting my shirts by color category and makes for an easy morning of getting ready.

Opposite of the shirts is my winter coats and fancier dresses. Basically items of clothing that are only brought out once in a blue moon. I always thought I HAD to have a new dress for an event. I am embarrassed to say that at least five of the dresses hanging here have only been worn once. Ahhh I am ashamed. Good thing we have numerous weddings, my MBA graduation, my little brother's high school graduation, and my SIL's college graduation all coming up this year! These dresses will finally get some use! Plus, my SIL is awesome about letting me borrow the numerous dresses she bought for her sorority events. She's the best SIL ever. Seriously, sorry, she takes the cake.

To the left of the coats, and the right of the shirts, we have the jeans, skirts, and casual dresses area. I will be honest, I need to get rid of half my jeans. The reason I can't budge is because a lot of them are Seven's and it is like a punch in the gut 1) that I spent that much on jeans, and 2) to just giveaway expensive jeans like that. Some of them I have had since high school! They still fit, but I am definitely curvier than I was so they just look awkward. Pretty soon I am going to have a jeans-try-on day and whatever doesn't fit is going. End of story. There are three adorable girls that live a couple doors down who range in age from 6-18, so I know they would be happy to take them off my hands!

I don't have that many skirts and all of them have got great use. I have a couple pencil shirts from LOFT for work days when I need to be fancy, and then I have around five other casual skirts that I have gathered over the years.

The casual dresses are my favorite! I can wear them in the summer with flats, and in the winter with leggings and boots! Not dirtying a pair of jeans is always a win in my book!

To the left of the jeans starts my cardigans and blazers. I fold all my cardigans over the hanger to prevent those weird shoulder bubbles. You know what I am talking about? These items are sort-of tucked away in the corner because once summer hits, we can kiss all these babies goodbye until abouttt November. Seriously, there is never a reason for a cardigan in the summer in Texas. Never-evereverever.

Tee shirts. Oh the insane amount of tee shirts I own. Having gone to the same camp for 14 years, playing college softball, having a SIL that is a Pi Phi, and going on a ski vacation every year since I was six adds up to a lot of tee shirts. I also have a drawer in my dresser stocked full. Ugh. This area could really use a clean out as well, but tee shirts are my weekend go-to, so I don't feel bad for keeping them.

Up next is the stupid number of tennis shoes I have. And I only wear one pair. The rattiest pair. Typical.

I wore these Asics when training for my half marathon back in 2010. I honestly hate them. They are not that comfortable, but everyone insisted I get a pair. I wear them probably three times a year. But since I can't buy a new pair this year, and my favorite pair is on the verge of falling apart, these blue-babies might just weasel their way back to the top.

Mint condition Nike's that have only been slightly worn. I don't mind these, but they just aren't my favorite.

These were my first pair of "running shoes." Not "cross-training" shoes, running shoes. Superrrrr comfortable, but I ran in them so much they are only good for sporadic workouts. I need to buy a new insole for them. I'll put that on my to-do list :) For as long as I have had them (probably five years) they are in great physical shape, just a bit worn on the inside.

The old school Newbs. Not exactly a "workout" shoe. Everyone in college had them. They were great for walking to class in my fashionable softball sweats and over sized softball sweatshirt. Also, if I ever wandered into the gym, not with intentions of working out, but then randomly decided to play a game of racquetball or something, I was prepared.

These were my FAVORITE pair until I got the grey ones below. I wore them to workouts for softball in college and continued to use the heck out of them after that. They finally have a hole in the top...but that doesn't stop me from wearing them! Although, Sarah, you shouldn't be afraid to give these beauts a good cleaning...

And onto my faves. I bought these in March of 2010 and they have been my go-to-shoes ever since. I just love them. No particular reason, but I just do. The left shoe is about to get a hole in the top of the mesh where my big toe hits when I run. Don't think that will stop me from wearing these! You be trippin'! This may be the first pair of tennis shoes I actually wear until they fall apart!

One last pair I have are in my car. I keep them there just in case I have to fill in for a flag football game, or need to run from the cops. Just kidding, kind of :)

They are these:

These are another pair of my favorites! Of course mine are much dirtyier than these, but basically the same.

As you can see, I have enough shoes to last a life time. Seven pairs of okay to great tennis shoes. God is really opening my eyes and allowing me to see all that I have. If my grey shoes crumble, guess what?, I have six other pairs in perfect condition that will get me though my bi-yearly workouts!

Speaking of bi-yearly workouts...I signed up for a gym membership last week. I am on hold from working out for the time being because of a possible bulging disk in my neck from the Jog'r Egg Nog'r compiled with a ski wipe out that I experienced a couple weeks ago. I hadn't fallen in probably 6+ years, took one bad fall, and now my disks are bulging. I am getting old.

Speaking of getting old, my day of birth is next Friday...for all of you planning on getting me a present. Totally kidding, kinda :) Chris  this is your warning, my BIRTHDAY IS NEXT FRIDAY.

Back to closet talk.

Ever since I did the closet clean up a couple weeks ago I have been keeping up with the shoe organization and separation of clothes. It is doing wonders for my resolution. Anytime I think I want something new I just look in my closet and think, "Now look at all the clothes you haven't even worn this year!" Eye-opener.

I will conclude this post with a couple other pictures and a shot of my jewelry organization. My jewelry is hung behind out closet door, which is perfect!

You can read all about the jewelry organizer here. It is so nice to have your jewels on display. You wear everything so much more!

Shoes...

...and shoes...

...and more shoes.

Thanks so much for sticking with me thought that whole post! Whew, clothes and shoes overload!

Y'all have been so encouraging throughout this whole resolution! THANK YOU!

God is really working with me and I honestly have no desire to go shopping. Weird, but true. I have walked by stores ranging from Ross to Neimans and have not had one ounce of urge to go in. Truly a blessing and I know God is stirring in my heart and teaching me a lesson that will last a lifetime.

Looking at all I have is enough to thank God everyday. I have too many clothes, and too many shoes, and too much of a lot of things, and I am now realizing that. There are more important things to life than a closet full of clothes.

Can't wait to continue to see the changes taking place in my heart!

Have a perfect Thursday, everyone :)

PS: I am super giddy because I get to pick up my darling hubs from the airport tonight! Alone time is good, but I miss my best friend! Plus, getting his daily pictures of the beach is kinda unfair!

What I Wore Wednesday - Weekend Shopping

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Read: This post was intended to be a normal WIWW post...that was until...well until I decided to write for 20 minutes and realized there was no turning back. Gotta mix it up every now and then!

I started my shopping weekend Friday after work. I ran out at 4:00 - and never looked back - and went straight to Franny's, or as most people know it, Francesca's. I had my Pinterest app in toe and was focused on buying items I had pinned.

When going through my closet last week I realized I am lacking in the long sleeve shirt department. That is probably due to my abilities to produce heat like a fire-cracker on the Fourth of July. Chris and I are that couple who don't turn the heater on unless it gets below 30 degrees, and we would rather go to the snow than the beach. Because of that, I ususally wear short sleeve shirts and just throw a cardi on over it. I am only in my 20's, but I swear I get hot flashes.

My shopping mission was to find long sleeved blouses and jeans. Yes I have lots of pants, but I noticed they are similar to the colors of a rainbow and I am in need of some "normal" jeans. Luckily a friend of a friend sent me the friends and family coupon from Banana Republic, so I got five full priced items for 50% off. Score!

Do you ever get in those moods where you have your game face on, credit cards hot and ready, and you are ready to shop until you drop? Friday was that kind of day evening.

After scoring big at Franny's, I decided that I should head to Forever 21 in search of "essential" items that I had pinned numerous times on Pinterest (i.e. I have pinned the same blue jean shirt four times...I think it was time I bought one!). Follow me on Pinterest (https://pinterest.com/sarahtuckerup/) and you will see my repeated pins and love affair with food. That was your warning, I love food.

After scouring the racks of F21 (can I shorten it like that?) I got in the fitting room line with my clothes. After waiting approximately .0078 minutes I decided to hope for the best and head home without trying on any of the clothes. I should know my body, right?

When I got home I tried on my flannel button down, blue jean shirt, light blue flowy blouse, and the other items I had picked up from Francesca's. Friday was a long-sleeve-shirt buying day...Saturday was the day to buy for the lower half.

Here are some of the cute tops that came home with me. Chris, they were all free. I spent no money :)

Pleated Blouse from Forever 21

Jean Shirt from Forever 21

Cross Sweater from Forever 21

Similar to what I bought: Plaid Top from Forever 21
La Dee Dots Top
Polka Dot Top from Francesca's

I can't find the other top I got from Francesca's. It is cream colored and flowy with gold beads down the front. Totally GORG!

Also at Francesca's I hit the shoe jackpot because they were having a 40% off fall shoe sale. It was like the shoe fairies were with me because they had one pair of grey boots left in my size!!! They have this adorbs colored zipper on the back. I was in heaven when they got discounted to $40.

Side note: I just realized this post is taking for-ev-er and I now have no chance of writing my normal WIWW post, so I am going on with my shopping tanget.

Pushing forward now with Saturday's shopping finds. I will say that I needed jeans and having the Banana coupon came at the perfect time.

Ya see...here in Texas we don't wear jeans for the majority of the months out of the year. We usually have summer year around with a few weeks of fall. Then randomly we have an artic freeze, and everything is shut down...as in you don't leave your house...so jeans are not needed, only sweatpants. With that being said, your my body tends to change from year to year. Being that all my jeans are from high school, seriously, I decided it was time to upgrade.

Good for me the jeans still fit! Bad thing was that junior sized jeans are not made for woman with, as Chris calls them, "child-bearing hips." So yes, I could still get my eight year old jeans on, and yes they fit super funny. It was time I bit the bullet and bought myself some new jeans.

Banana came up clutch with five new fab pairs of pants. Blame my lazinees on why I just linked the pants I bought instead of providing you with lovely pictures.

THESE black skinny jeans are THE MOST COMFORTABLE jeans ever. I put them on and was in awe of how much they felt like leggings, yet the were jeans. Does that mean I just confessed to loving jeggings? Hey, I'll rock the jeggings all day long if they are as comfortable as these!

THESE dark wash skinnies need to get hemmed. Height was not something my family was given.

THESE trousers are so comfortable. I already have a pair of trousers, but I have to wear heels due to my reasoning in the previous paragraph. I bought these, and am getting them hemmed, in order to be able to wear flats with them.

THESE pants are the most comfy "business" pants ever. Go try them on and you will see. They are secretly stretchy and when you sit at a desk all day (blah!), stretch is necessary! I also got a pair in this color.

So there ya have it. My annoyingly long post about almost everything I bought this weekend. I did pick up a couple pieces of cheap jewelry from Forever 21 and some leggings from Franny's, but you get the gist.

Some people may wonder: why so much shopping? I will give you a hint...it has to do with my New Year's resolution....but you will have to wait until closer to New Year's to find out! Eeekkk! I am SO excited! Can you believe less than 50 days until 2013...un-be-lieve-able.

Let's just get through Wednesday! Happy Humpday!

Pinterest and I are Going Shopping

Thursday, November 8, 2012

This weekend I am loading up me and my Pinterest app and we are headed to the mall. I am shopping based on outfits that I adore on that addicting site. I am mainly in search of items I have pinned several times without know it. Do you do that? Hey, it is better to pin it 20 times then miss out on the opportunity to clothe yourself in the perfect outfit :)

So far this fall I have pinned tons of jean shirts, black boots, and aztec sweaters. Those are top three on my list.

THIS Aztec sweater is something that could find a home in my closet and I wouldn't mind.

These Steve Madden are a possible black boot option...

What are you doing this weekend?

This is the first weekend in over a month that Chris and I don't have much planned/we are not going out of town. We are excited to veg-out and Chris is going to clean and do laundry...he just doesn't know it yet! Hopefully I will come home from the mall with some items to show y'all next week!

Have a great weekend!

Pinterest Told Me To...

Pinterest told me what to cook last night and what to wear today! Thank ya, Pinterest!

Have you ever seen Sheaffer's adorable blog conveniently titled Pinterest Told Me To? Go check it out already if you haven't! What are you waiting on!!? She has reminded me, daily, of the steps to getting ready in the morning. Wake up. Look at Pinterest for outfit inspiration. Get ready. And that is exactly what I did this morning.

This was one of those mornings where I just could not decide what to wear. After about five minutes I realized that Pinterest was there to save the day. I promptly ran and got my phone and scrolled through my hundreds on pinned outfits and one hit the spot.

I was going for a more casual look today, so jeans were definitely in the question, but boots were out due to the forecasted temperatures of 80 degrees ( this is my silently crying...).

Here is my outfit inspiration from Pinterest:

Here is what I came up with:

Yay for super quality photos, not, but you get the gist. I had all the components of this Pinterest inspired outfit except a bright scarf. That is now on my weekend grocery shopping list. I love these turquoise earrings, and my leopard flats are from Target. They take some time to break in, and a few hundred blisters, but after you get passed that point they are adorable.

Tomorrow I will tell you what Pinterest told me to cook...and it was yummy!

Linking up with Keep Calm and Carry On and Beautiful Mess!

What I Wore Wednesday - Green Jeans!!

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

I know, green jeans?! That is what I was thinking when I spotted them. But, then I saw the price tag and they hopped in my basket like stink on poo, or white on rice?? Anyways, I knew for that price I could figure something out.

Since fall has kinda-sorta arrived here in the Lone Star State I have been wearing my boots as much as possible. I promise all winter it will not be boots every Wednesday, or at least it won't be these boots every Wednesday :)

Everyday when I get home I let the dogs out in the front yard for some play time. They hardly ever actually play in the back yard, but the second they are let loose in the front yard, they are running around like crazies! Also, when their Daddy gets home they like to show off their playing skills and put on a show. And then Chris gets them all riled up and they have been known to run smack-dab into me without even skipping a step. Thanks in advance, Wrigley and Bailey, for my future blown ACL because of your lack in looking before you run.

Now for the budget break down:

- Steve Madden Boots: $165 - as I said before, totally justified
- Grey Sweater from Nordstrom: $32
- Black Scoop Neck Blouse: Maybe 20 bucks or less from Banana Republic. I just remember it was heavily discounted.
- Necklace: Free, thanks Momma!
- Kelly Green Pants from Target: $11.78 <-- Yes, less than 12 dollars (holla!)

Do you remember these pants? Well these green gems are the same brand and marked down to the same price. I will admit they are a bit big, but based on my lack of working out since I got hitched, I might need that extra room :) Or of course an extra couple rounds in the dryer could always do the trick!

Be sure to check out my other WIWW posts here!

Happy Hump Day!

What I Wore Wednesday - Michael Kors and Stripes

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

I have expressed my love for Michael Kors here talking about items that I want, but now I am going to talk about MK shoes that I have. Obviously champagne taste is genetic. Or at least I am blaming it on Meme :) Now if only she left that Gucci purse lying around somewhere...

This outfit is composed of items that range in single digit prices, to triple digit prices (Gasp! I splurged, but don't worry, I justify everything!).

I am dying to wear more fall-ish clothes, but with temperatures in the upper 80's, Texas forces me to keep the sundresses close. I just. want. to. put. them. away! "Supposedly" we are getting cold weather this weekend. I am not holding my breath.

Last weekend we headed to the Hill Country to celebrate Meme's life and I chose this navy and white striped dress, my bubble necklace found in Canton, and my MK nudies (Yes, I just made that word up. Inappropriate? Nah!).

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, needs/deserves/isn't living unless they have a pair of nude pumps. Or wedges. Basically I love nude shoes and I love Michael. He makes my speakers go boom boom. As does Chris, but Chris doesn't design shoes...am I justifying this purchase well enough yet? No? Okay, I'll go on.

Ya see, I bought these pumps last spring when I needed a neutral pair of shoes to wear to all my bridal showers, yet I wanted them to be comfortable fashionable enough to wear to work. These peep toe cuties did just the trick, and with a little no convincing from my buddy at MK, I was sold. I must say, they are getting their monies worth!

We took these pictures in the dining room at my Granddad's retirement home, so we didn't get to have the normal let's-take-a-million-pictures-and-choose-a-couple of them photoshoot.

Nude color + MK = LOVE
Isn't my cousin Erin GORG???!!!

This dress is so light and comfy. Comfort is keyyyy. It came with a bright pink skinny belt that I am not a fan of (and the belt was too small, but we are not going to mention that because it is not Sarah's fault she has no defined waist or torso and she can't pull off belts. blah.). I usually opt for no belt because it cuts me in half and instead just let the elastic do its thing.

I paired the dress with my yellow bubble necklace because, ummm, I love it. And the outfit screams for a pop of color. Maybe that is how the "designer" was justifying the awful pink belt.

Now for got budget breakdown:

- Dress from Ross: drum roll please...$9.99! Yup, worth all .999 cents.
- Necklace from Canton: $42
- Shoes from Michael Kors: $120, but totally justified remember.
- Grand Total: $171.99

Here is how I normally wear this dress. No, I don't have pictures of it and I am already in my PJ's, so I am just going to describe it to you.

I have these white, $5 imitation Tory Burch sandals. 99% of the time I have worn this dress I throw those babies on, with the dress, and head out the door. Grand total for that outfit is just shy of 15 bucks.

Another way I wear this dress is with brown wedges and a long brown beaded necklace I have. Since I got the brown wedges almost 8 years ago for $5.98 at Target and the necklace just jumped out of my Mom's jewelry box into mine (isn't it funny how that happens?!?!), I'd calculate this outfit to be right around 15 bucks as well.

As you can see this outfit doesn't have to be expensive, it just depends on what you pair it with!

And can I just add that Ross has never in my life come up more clutch than this year. I mean this outfit, this outfit, this outfit, and now this outfit all have pieces from Ross. Who-da thunk it?!

Do you have any great buys from Ross?!

Happy Wednesday!
